House by house
Compare the houses
This page is the plain ledger behind the essays: the house, the state, the opening date or year that the record allows, the operator or owner wording available today, the room figure where it is published or sourced, and the setting I use when reading the stay.

How to read the comparison
I read these houses as physical places first, because the building and the setting decide much of the stay before a room key is cut. A tower on the Derwent, a Southbank complex beside the Yarra, a Burswood resort on the Swan River and a new precinct at Queen’s Wharf are not interchangeable, even where the corporate language begins to sound alike. The table below therefore starts with the house and state, then moves through opening, operator, rooms and setting.
The opening column is not always the same kind of fact. Wrest Point has the clearest date, 10 February 1973 by Wikipedia, while its own official wording says it was born in 1973 and is Australia’s first ever casino. Crown Melbourne has a temporary casino date and a permanent Southbank date. Crown Sydney has a hotel inauguration date and a later casino opening. The Star Brisbane opened in stages after Treasury Brisbane closed on 25 August 2024, and Treasury is not treated here as a current house.
The operator column also needs careful reading. Some entries are official corporate wording, some are regulator wording, and some are by secondary sources where the venue’s own pages do not state the point. The Star Brisbane wording is kept to the facts supplied: The Star also manages The Star Brisbane, on behalf of the Destination Brisbane Consortium owned by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises and Far East Consortium International, with the later transaction details noted in the table in compressed form.
For the ranking logic behind this comparison, I use the same five criteria set out in how the houses are ranked: story and building, the stay today as published, setting, transparency and continuity of operation.
The comparison table
The room column is deliberately uneven, because the sources are uneven. Where an official page gives a room count, I use it. Where the facts give only Wikipedia, tourism pages or other secondary sources, I say so. Where current fetched pages do not publish a total, I do not invent one. The same restraint applies to opening dates and operator wording; if the source quality is secondary or medium confidence, the table says so rather than smoothing the record.
Two regulatory facts affect the reading. The Star Sydney’s casino licence remains suspended, and the manager’s appointment has been extended to 30 June 2027, unless terminated earlier by the NICC. SkyCity announced on 30 September 2026 that it would shortly commence a formal sale process for the Adelaide business, with no certainty of a transaction or other outcome.
What the room figures can and cannot tell you
A large room count does not by itself make a house easier to choose. Crown Melbourne is published by Crown as having over 1,600 rooms across Crown Towers, Crown Metropol and Crown Promenade, while the roster table’s individual figures are Wikipedia counts. Crown Perth’s three-hotel total is also drawn from Wikipedia figures. By contrast, The Star Grand Brisbane has a 340-room figure from the Queen’s Wharf opening material and current hotel page, so its room count is a cleaner contemporary fact.
Several houses resist a neat number. Country Club Tasmania publishes room and villa categories but not a total on the fetched pages. The Star Sydney has two hotel products, The Darling and The Star Grand, but the roster sheet records conflicting third-party figures for The Darling and an official 309-room figure for The Star Grand only in the deeper notes. Mindil Beach has a tourism-sourced 152-room figure, with conflicting figures elsewhere; Lasseters has a 205-room figure from NT tourism and Wikipedia, while the official IHG page was not available through the fetch.
For a reader, the useful question is not only how many rooms exist, but how clearly the house publishes what a guest needs. That is why transparency is a criterion, not a footnote, and why all ten essays spend time on what is known, what is not published and what has recently changed.
Setting changes the stay
The settings fall into several families. There are river and harbour houses, including Crown Melbourne, Crown Perth, The Star Sydney, Crown Sydney, SkyCity Adelaide and The Star Brisbane. There are Tasmanian houses where the landscape is more open in the reading: Wrest Point on the River Derwent foreshore and Country Club Tasmania at Prospect Vale with golf and parkland. The Northern Territory houses sit in a different register again, with Mindil Beach by the Arafura Sea and Lasseters at the foot of the MacDonnell Ranges and backing onto the Alice Springs Golf Course.
State rules are not repeated in detail here, because the comparison would become a regulator’s directory. The useful short line is this: these are physical venues, casino entry is 18+ everywhere, and Australia bans online casino play under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. For regulator names, help-line wording and state-by-state notes, use the by state page.
If the table sends you towards one house, the next step is to read its essay rather than stop at the ledger. A room count says little about how a tower lands on its waterfront, how a precinct is approached at night, or how much of a current stay is still in transition.
A letter to the desk
Ask the desk to look into a stay
Tell the desk your dates and the house you have in mind; it asks the hotel about a room and the current rate and writes back by email, usually within one working day. No card details are taken here.
